MANILA – Team Negros will become the third Western Visayas-based basketball squad to compete in the fourth season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) this year.

The entry of the team owned by John Gilbor of Silvergraces Construction and Construction Supply in Pontevedra was formalized after his meeting with MPBL founder Sen. Manny Pacquiao on Monday evening.

“5.4.3.2.1… Team Negros joins MPBL Season 4! Thank you Lord! #TeamNegros #Silvergrace,”Gilbor wrote in his Facebook post with pictures from his meeting with Pacquiao.

While the details of the squad were not yet available as of press time, one of the names being considered to handle the team is University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos mentor Jerome Aledron.

The team is also scheduling to hold tryouts for aspiring players once the coronavirus disease 2019 situation normalizes.

Prior to Team Negros, Iloilo United Royals of JJ Javelosa and Bacolod City-Master Sardines made their MPBL debuts in the 2019-2020 season of the MPBL Lakan Cup.

The United Royals had an impressive run as they finished the elimination round with 18-12 win-loss record. They were beaten in the quarterfinals round by Basilan Steel.

The Master Sardines, on the other hand, had an inconsistent first season as they capped off the eliminations with 11-19 win-loss record./PN
