BACOLOD City – All weighing scales and other measuring instruments used at markets in the city must be tested, calibrated and sealed, according to the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).
This is to ensure that all consumer-retailer transactions at markets are “fair, honest and equitable.”
The SP approved a resolution requesting the City Treasurer’s Office to visit all the markets in the city to test, calibrate and seal all the measuring instruments there.
Resolution proponent Councilor Bartolome Orola said the SP also requested the Bacolod City Police Office, City Legal Office-Enforcement Team and City Mayor’s Office-Price Monitoring Unit to regularly monitor the markets.
Orola said he has been receiving numerous reports that weighing scales in some markets in the city have inaccurate measurements, especially during the holiday season.
The councilor said the newly approved resolution will “protect the consuming public against deceptive and unfair sales, acts or practices.”
But Orola said strict monitoring of the measuring instruments must be observed.
Executive Assistnat Ernie Pineda, head of the city’s market coordinating and monitoring task force, said there are consumer welfare desks set up in the three major markets in the city to accommodate the complaints of consumers.
