THIS WEEK is one of the busiest of the month. Why? The ASEAN Summit is about to start.

I believe this is one of the best ways to gather world leaders and discuss common solutions to humanity’s most obstinate problems. And hopefully, these discussions will draw out the paramount of national interest.

The summit calls for a challenge – a test of globalization. What will happen this week is part of the process of globalization. It is an “increasing interaction of people through the growth of the international flow of money, ideas and culture.” It is also “an economic process of integrations which has social and cultural aspects as well.”

Now, why is this a challenge or a test of globalization? Let me share three points of view on how globalization affects us. Also, how these affect in general all nations.

First, the phenomenon of globalization is unstoppable. This means that when economic business opens it becomes overwhelming for the countries not to go with the flow with the market to survive and sustain its participation in goods and services. A lot of multinational companies open that leads to a good source of investment for third world countries. It also helps in the purchasing power of other countries as well as in tourism.

Second, globalization contributes in the unification of work force. The rise in business, economy and trade make cultural ties stronger. There is cultural exchange among people especially when they do business. Thus, some countries share the same interests that lead to unity.

Third, globalization promotes liberal democracy and capitalism. Here, people are considered world citizens because they become part of a worldwide process and cultural or social exchanges.

Globalization may have great impacts. It is a unique process with unique results. However, the challenge comes in. It is hard to protect and maintain its uniqueness. There is the possibility of economic setback, democracy meltdown and social disintegration. Every country has its own philosophy. Most of all, the poor becomes poorer and the rich become richer. Sad reality.

As they say, globalization is an economic tsunami that is sweeping the planet. We can’t stop it but there are many things we can do to slow it down and make it more equitable.

I hope that this summit will prove that globalization will help close the gap between the poorest countries and the richest. Let it live according to its purpose in creating more wealth in the world.
