ILOILO City – “There is money in agriculture because in agriculture, there is business.”
This was said by Ian Calibara, vegetable specialist for the high value crops development program of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 6.
Calibara said owning a hectare of land is a good investment because it offers various opportunities.
“One hectare of land can handle a minimum of 5,000 seedlings. Multiply these seedlings to the number of fruits it can bear. Multiply it again to the kilos or the average weight of the products. You will get a higher income,” he explained.
“One squash plant can bear five mature fruits with an average weight of three kilos per fruit,” Calibara added.
For ampalaya, Calibara said one plant can yield as much as 20 kilos.
“Growing vegetables does not need a wide area for ideal vegetables are grown in the backyard level,” he said./PN
