MANILA – Ateneo Blue Eagles star Ferdinand “Thirdy” Ravena III and Kobe Paras were among the players composing Gilas Pilipinas’ 23-man pool for the FIBA World Cup that the Philippines will host in 2023.
Also listed were collegiate stars Robert Bolick, Andres Desiderio, Jaymar Perez, Juan Gomez de Llano, Matt Nieto, Isaac Go, Kenneth Tuffin, Joshua Sinclair, Arvin Tolentino, Jeo Ambohot, Kenmark Carino, and Jayvee Mocon.
Completing the list were Rodolfo Alejandro, Remy Martin, Kenneth Tuffin, Dwight Ramos, Kai Sotto, Abu Tratter, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo, Will Gozum, and Troy Rike.
While the list was “by no means final,” Gilas head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes said he hopes to gather these players as early as possible to prepare for the tournament.
The FIBA Central Board announced in December 2017 that the Philippines, along with Japan and Indonesia, won the hosting rights for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
It will be the Philippines and Japan’s second time to host the world basketball tournament since 1978 and 2006, respectively. It will be the first time for Indonesia.
As incentive for cohosting, the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan were automatically qualified to the World Cup, whose 2023 edition will be the first to be hosted by multiple nations.
Four group stage games were to be played in the Philippines while the other four will be split by Japan and Indonesia. The knockout matches will also be held in the Philippines./PN
