MANILA – With the departure of gunners Paul Lee, Jeffrei Chan and JR Quinahan via trades, Chris Tiu is now taking on his new role as one of the take-charge guys for Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
The former Ateneo Blue Eagles star admitted that, while his new role for the Painters is challenging, he is trying his best to do it to help his squad in the 2017-2018 PBA Philippine Cup.
“I’m trying to be more offensive-minded – I’m more scoring-minded, if there’s such a word,” Tiu said. “Previously, I was pass-first but with the departure of some of our scorers we have to fill in.”
He added: “My offseason has been surprisingly good. I think ‘yung confidence ko is much higher now, especially that I know I’ll be playing a lot of minutes than before. I just hope to stay healthy.”
Tiu, who only averaged less than six points per game in his six-year PBA career, had a decent start this season with 12 points, three rebounds, one assists and one steal in Painters’ 82-79 win over TNT KaTropa.
“That makes a difference in any athlete’s confidence if you know you’re gonna get minutes. (Painters) Coach Caloy (Garcia) has showed that he’s been trusting me now more,” Tiu said.
Tiu, a former Gilas Pilipinas mainstay, is hoping the Painters will continue its winning ways this season especially with the impending return of injured players Jericho Cruz and Anthony Washington./PN
