ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) sought for the posting of traffic police auxiliaries at the entrances and exits of elementary and high schools.
Schools are a major traffic concern, especially in the morning before classes start and in the afternoon after classes have been dismissed, explained Councilor R Leone Gerochi, chairperson of the SP committee on transportation.
In a resolution, the SP addressed its concern to the newly-created Public Safety and Transportation Management Office.
Aside from facilitating the smooth flow of traffic, police auxiliaries are also a crime deterrent, said Gerochi.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the SP’s initiative complemented the programs, projects and services being implemented to sustain Iloilo’s being a child-friendly city.
“One of the causes of heavy traffic is the lack of consideration of some drivers who prioritize their own convenience rather than the convenience of the public,” said Gerochi.
The SP also asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to repaint the white broken lines on Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue (formerly Diversion Road) and other national roads for lane segregation.
Road signs and markings are essential to effective traffic management, stressed Geroche.
Due to the rehabilitation/widening of major roads, the white broken lines have become misaligned or have entirely disappeared./PN
