ILOILO City – Seven electric poles of Panay Electric Company (PECO) collapsed in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district, creating a traffic jam.

A passing container van dragged a dangling telecommunications cable from the posts, triggering the collapse around 11 a.m. yesterday.

A streetlight also fell down.

The container van was owned by the Philippine Span Asia Courier Corp., according to Fire Officer 3 Val Cesar Divinagracia, team leader of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) – Iloilo City Special Rescue Unit.

“PECO’s sectionalizing cutout equipment was able to automatically isolate the incident so that the entire feeder 14 did not suffer an outage but rather only a small portion of the feeder,” PECO spokesperson Mikel Afzelius told Panay News.

The culprit was either the truck which was not supposed to pass in the area because it was too big or the telecommunications company, he added.

PECO has yet to come up with the total damage but Afzelius said they will “bill the person or company that initiated the accident.”

Of the seven PECO posts, three were made of concrete. The others were wooden poles.

“Telecom wires are made of heavy duty high-tension wires. When bundled together in a certain crossing, they will not break,” said Afzelius. “It is in everyone’s best interest that they follow standards when installing their lines on PECO’s posts.”/PN
