MANILA – Rep. Jerry Treñas said he will abide with his party’s stand supporting the proposed revival of the death penalty.
“The party (PDP-Laban) has a stand and we have to follow the party line,” the lawmaker from Iloilo City told Panay News.
Less than a month into his re-election in May 2016, Treñas, a former senior member of the Liberal Party, swore allegiance to PDP-Laban, the political party of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Duterte, the party’s chairman, who vowed to reinstate the death penalty, has urged lawmakers to approve the proposal for criminals involved in the trafficking of illegal drugs, gun-for-hire syndicates, and heinous crimes.
House speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, PDP-Laban secretary-general, already filed a bill seeking to revive the death penalty for certain heinous crimes such as plunder, treason, piracy, carnapping, and illegal drugs-related cases among others.
Treñas said that the party cannot push for its key legislation if it cannot mobilize enough legislative support from its membership.
“Kung pagusto lang kami sa amon decision, wala na ina partido (If a decision is left entirely to personal choice, we don’t need political parties). Even during the time of President (Benigno Aquino IV), we always followed the party line in important issues like the Reproductive Health bill, impeachment, and the like,” he explained.
In 2014, Treñas said he would support legislative proposals reimposing the death penalty.
Crimes punishable by death penalty should include rape with murder, multiple murder, certain cases of drug trafficking and drug smuggling, the Ilonggo congressman previously said.
“These criminals no longer fear the law,” he added.
But, in 2016, Treñas expressed opposition to the reimposition of the death penalty, saying that capital punishment will not deter crimes./PN
