ILOILO – A tornado associated with a localized thunderstorm damaged 15 houses in two barangays in Pototan town.
Six of these houses were totally wrecked; nine were partially damaged. Here’s the breakdown:
* Barangay Casalsagan – 11 houses (four totally damaged and seven partially damaged)
* Barangay Cahaguikican – four houses (two totally damaged and two partially damaged)
According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Managament Office (MDRRMO) of Pototan, the tornado struck the houses afternoon of June 24.
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground. It is often portended by a dark, greenish sky.
Black storm clouds gather. A funnel suddenly appears, as though descending from a cloud.
The funnel hits the ground and roars forward with a sound like that of a freight train approaching.
The tornado tears up everything in its path.
The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) and Philippine Red Cross released family food packs to the displaced families in Barangay Casalsagan and Barangay Cahaguikican.
The displaced temporarily sought shelter with relatives or in barangay hall.
The municipal government may extend financial assistance.
Just this June 13, a tornado also hit three barangays Pototan – Pajo, Culob and Cansilayan.
Nineteen houses were damaged. Twenty families were displaced./PN
