KALIBO, Aklan – A new three-storey, nine-classroom school building has been put up at the Kalibo Integrated Special Education Center (KISEC).
The typhoon-resistant edifice will “offer the pupils a better learning environment,” said Principal Wilma Werigene Malapad-Villa.
A donor foundation financed the construction through a fundraising campaign under the “build back better” initiative after the devastation caused by super typhoon “Yolanda” in November 2013.
The school building was turned over to the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Aklan just this Oct. 3.
It was intended for the KISEC’s more than 40 teachers and over 1,000 pupils, including visually impaired, hearing-impaired and children with autism.
The Bank of the Philippine Islands Foundation identified the KISEC as its beneficiary of a typhoon-resistant school building.
Executive Director Fidelina Corcuera said a similar school building was built in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
The foundation said the building can withstand winds of up to 250 kilometers per hour and features a rain catchment system, an alarm system, LED lights, and glass windows.
On June 1, 2015 the DepEd Education Facilities Unit inspected the KISEC’s three-classroom Imelda Type school building and a makeshift classroom and found them “dilapidated and unsafe for use.”
On Sept. 25 that year the structures and the adjacent stage were demolished by provincial government personnel and soldiers from the Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion.
By Oct. 14 a groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held.
Provincial Board member Emmanuel Soviet Russia Dela Cruz, representing Gov. Florencio Miraflores at the turnover, asked the teachers, parents and pupils to “maintain and keep the school building clean and safe.” (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
