UAAP: UST, UP settle for draw in men’s football

MANILA – The rematch between last year’s UAAP men’s football finals protagonists University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons and University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers ended in a 1-1 draw at the FEU-Diliman pitch.

The Fighting Maroons opened the scoring on Thursday courtesy of Dane Saavedra in the 50th minute but the UST was quick to equalize with Steven Anotado converting from a pass by AJ Pasion at the 54th minute.

The Growling Tigers had a chance to take the full three points late in the match behind the team’s leading goal scorers Anotado and Conrado Dimacali, but their attempts were defended well.
With the outcome, the Growling Tigers seized the solo second place in the standings with 10 points while the defending champions Fighting Maroons snapped its two-game slide for seven points.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University Tamaraws and Adamson University Falcons also settled for a 1-1 deadlock thanks to two key saves in stoppage time by Falcons’ goalkeeper Carl Viray.

Gio Pabualan netted his third goal of the season in the 61st minute to put the Tamaraws ahead, but the Falcons made an equalizer courtesy of a Kim Bardaje’s header three minutes later.

In the other match, Ivan Ouano scored twice as National University Bulldogs earned its first full points of the season with a 2-0 victory over the skidding University of the East Red Warriors./PN
