MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses pounced on the shorthanded National University Lady Bulldogs, 26-24, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball at the San Juan Arena.

Ejiya Laure led the way with 20 points, including 19 attacks on Saturday night.

Cherry Rondina and Mary Dominique Pacres added 16 and 12 markers, respectively, for the Golden Tigresses.

The victory improved the Golden Tigresses to joint second place with defending champions De La Salle University Lady Spikers and Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws at 4-2.

“Napakalaking bagay ‘yung back-to-back na panalo para sa amin, kasi importante ‘yun sa morale ng bata,” said Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio Reyes. “Naka-recover na kami sa last few games na nadisgrasya kami.”

After a strong start in the opening set, the Golden Tigresses suddenly found themselves down 21-24 but managed to salvage the set with five straight points behind Rondina and Laure.

UST broke away from a tight second frame with hits from Laure, Pacres and Rondina for a 2-0 set lead.

The Golden Tigresses had a chance to sweep the Lady Bulldogs after taking a 23-21 lead in the third set but Princess Robles rallied NU to stay alive.

In the fourth frame, however, the Golden Tigresses went for the kill with conversions from Laure and Rondina for a 16-10 advantage. It grew further from thereon as UST ended the match in four sets.

For the struggling Lady Bulldogs, Robles and Ivy Lacsina finished with 14 markers apiece, while Audrey Paran chipped in 10 markers.

The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 1-4 win-loss record along with Adamson Lady Falcons and University of the East Lady Warriors./PN
