UNIVERSITY of the East Junior Warriors moved closer to clinching the 1st Hua Siong Invitational Basketball Tournament title after winning its first two matches at the Ty Eng Liong Gym of Hua Siong Ledesco Campus in La Paz, Iloilo City.
Junior Warriors banked on the strong showing of Shane Dichoso and Riggy Alinsoring to open its campaign on Saturday with a close 106-105 win over the Central Philippine University Golden Lions.
Dichoso and Alinsoring finished with 27 and 21 points, respectively, while Jerome Sullano added 17 markers for the Junior Warriors. Miguel Sasuman led the way with 33 markers for the Golden Lions.
UE clinched its second victory in the three-day pocket tournament on Sunday afternoon after a lopsided 97-71 triumph over St. John’s Institute-Bacolod.
Ilonggo Dichoso led the Junior Warriors with 16 points while Sullano chipped in 8 markers. Kyle Russel Andrada finished with 16 points, leading the SJI.
Hua Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix also had a strong start after a 98-73 win over the SJI. Reynold Tupas spearheaded the attack for the Red Phoenix with 25 points.
But Hua Siong was unable to make it two in a row after bowing to CPU 83-88 on Sunday afternoon. Sasuman continued his offensive outburst for the Golden Lions with 31 points.
The top finisher at the end of elimination round Monday evening will be adjudged the champion./PN
