MANILA – The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons maintained its unbeaten run in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament with a 25-22, 25-22, 29-31, 25-19 victory over the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses on Sunday at the San Juan Arena.
Diana Carlos led the way with 18 points, including 16 attacks, for the Lady Maroons, which moved up to solo first place in the standings with an unblemished 4-0 win-loss slate, its best start in the league in years.
Isa Molde added 14 markers, while Nicole Tiamzon contributed 13 points for the Lady Maroons, which also got a huge boost from Negrense Arielle Estranero, who had 53 excellent sets.
The Lady Maroons surged to an early lead in the first set but the Golden Tigresses answered back to keep it close at 22-all. Errors by the Golden Tigresses late in the set allowed the Lady Maroons take a 1-0 edge.
The second frame grew tight with both teams exchanging leads. The Lady Maroons finished the set with a 4-0 run behind Carlos, Kathy Bersola and Molde.
With its back against the wall, the Golden Tigresses went aggressive in the third frame for an 18-14 lead. But the Lady Maroons rallied back to force several deadlocks with the last at 29-all. Back-to-back hits by Ennajie Laure gave the set to the Golden Tigresses.
After tasting its first set loss this season, the Lady Maroons surged to a 16-10 start in the fourth set. Despite several rallies by the Golden Tigresses, the Lady Maroons still pulled off the victory with late hits from Tiamzon and Molde.
Laure top-scored with 18 points, on 16 attacks, while Cherry Rondina and Chlodia Cortez had 12 points each for the Golden Tigresses, which slid down to a 1-3 win-loss record./PN
