UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses and De La Salle University Lady Spikers won their respective openers in the Philippine University Games women’s volleyball on Monday in Dumaguete City.
Defending champion UST led by Ennajie Laure and Cherry Rondina cruised to an easy 25-20, 25-23, 17-25, 25-18 win over College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers.
UAAP titlist Lady Spikers, on the other hand, relied on veterans Kim Dy, Desiree Cheng and Ernestine Tiamzon to score 25-8, 25-15, 25-12 over University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas.
In other matches, NCAA champion Arellano University Lady Chiefs scored 25-14, 25-14, 25-13 against Foundation University while University of Mindanao-Tagum dominated Silliman University 25-17, 25-13, 25-23.
In the men’s action, UST Tiger Spikers scored a 25-16, 25-9, 25-16 triumph of University of Mindanao-Tagum while DLSU Green Spikers defeated Arellano University Chiefs 25-19, 25-19, 25-20.
University of the Philippines Maroons opened its campaign in men’s football with a 1-0 win over DLSU Green Booters while University of St. La Salle Bacolod edged Foundation University 5-1.
In men’s basketball, Hercor College survived a fourth-quarter rally by Silliman for a 70-60 win while STI-West Negros University manhandled ACSAT 91-63.
Over at the distaff side, Negros Oriental State University opened its campaign with a lopsided 80-30 victory over Siliman./PN
