MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses and Tiger Spikers earned an outright ticket to the finals after sweeping their elimination round matches in the UAAP 79 beach volleyball tournament on Friday at the Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
The Golden Tigresses of Cherry Rondina and Jem Guttierez completed the seven-game elimination round sweep with a 21-14, 21-15 win over the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws’ Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza.
Meanwhile, the Tiger Spikers, led by Kris Roy Guzman and Anthony Arbasto, kept their perfect slate in men’s action by hammering out a 21-12, 21-19 victory over the FEU Tamaraws’ Richard Solis and Jude Garcia.
The UST’s women’s and men’s teams will play in the opener of the best-of-three championship series against the survivors of the step-ladder semifinals at midday today. The remaining finals matches are scheduled on Sunday.
Defending women’s champion De La Salle University Lady Spikers clinched the remaining semifinals seat as Kim Fajardo and Christine Tiamzon defeated rival Ateneo Lady Eagles’ Michelle Morente and Kim Gequillana, 21-6, 21-16.
The Lady Spikers tied with the Lady Eagles at 4-3, as the loss of the Katipunan-based pair allowed the No. 2 seed Lady Tamaraws (5-2) to claim the twice-to-beat bonus in the step-ladder semifinals.
Meanwhile, National University Lady Bulldogs’ Aiko Urdas and Ilongga Roma Doromal edged University of the Philippines Lady Maroons’ Isa Molde and Diana Carlos, 21-19, 21-15, for identical 3-4 records but the two teams were booted out of the semis race.
University of the East Lady Warriors’ Judith Abil and Angelica Dacaymat defeated Adamson University Lady Falcons’ Jessica Galanza and Bernadette Flora, 21-10, 21-14, to wind up in seventh at 1-6./PN
