MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses completed its crown-retention bid by sweeping Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the UAAP Season 80 women’s beach volleyball finals on Saturday night at Sands SM by the Bay in Pasay City.
Golden Tigresses’ Cherry Rondina and Caitlyn Viray dominated Lady Tamaraws’ Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza 21-15, 21-19 in Game 2 of the best-of-three series. UST also won Game 1 (21-16, 22-20).
The winningest squad in UAAP women’s beach volleyball with five trophies, UST had to play catch up in the second set after trailing 13-19 before going on a 6-0 run to tie the score at 19-all.
Golden Tigresses snatched the lead 20-19 after an attack by Viray before Pons committed an error on her spike attack to hand the title to the UST pair.
Viray finished the match with 18 points while Rondina added 10 markers for UST. Negrense Pons and Atienza combined for 16 markers for Lady Tamaraws.
“Lahat ng laro namin from eliminations, hindi mo alam kung tutumba ka o hindi. Mabuti na lang iyong mental toughness ni Viray lumabas dito sa finals,” said Golden Tigresses head coach Paul Jay Doloiras.
But UST failed to make it a double celebration. Tiger Spikers suffered a 21-15, 14-21, 15-13 defeat at the hands of National University Bulldogs in the do-or-die Game 3.
Anthony Arbasto and Kris Roy Guzman first scored 22-20, 26-24 over Bulldogs’ Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad in Game 1 before the latter bounced back in Game 2 (21-19, 9-21, 15-10) to force a do-or-die Game 3.
The deciding game went down the wire in the third set before NU surged to a 14-12 lead. Arbasto trimmed the deficit 13-14 on an off-the-block hit but Bagunas sealed the championship for Bulldogs with a quick kill./PN
