ILOILO City – Cases of violence against women (VAW) in Western Visayas dropped by 31.40 percent, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
From January to October this year, 2,338 cases were recorded in the region – 1,070 incidents lower than last year’s 3,408 recorded in the same period.
Inspector Joem Malong, chief of the Regional Women and Children Protection Desk, said they have been relentless in protecting women from all forms of violence.
Iloilo province recorded 670 VAW cases; Aklan, 533; Iloilo City, 472; Capiz, 393; Antique, 169; and Guimaras, 101.
Majority of the VAW crimes committed were physical abuse (1,317 cases).
Malong said the campaign against illegal drugs was among the factors that contributed to the decrease in VAW cases.
“Somehow there is an effect. Compared to other years, this year recorded the biggest decrease,” said Malong.
Cases included those whose husbands were in the illegal drug list, especially during Oplan Tokhang.
To attain the goal of zero VAW in the region, an 18-day information campaign started on Nov. 25.
Regional offices of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Commission on Human Rights and PRO-6 lined up a number of activities.
A public forum dubbed “Sharing of Best Practices in Operating Barangay VAW Desks” will be held on Dec. 5 at Casa Real Iloilo.
The activity will gather representatives from various local government units to discuss best practices in helping victims of violence and to come up with initiatives to further decrease or eliminate crimes against women.
Other activities include poster-making and jingle writing that highlight not only the protection of women but also of their children. (PNA)
