BACOLOD City – Regulate the use of plastic bags in the city.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod urged the enforcement unit of the City Legal Office to strictly impose City Ordinance (CO) No. 562, or the Plastic Bag Regulation Ordinance.
CO No. 562 regulates the use, sale and provision of plastic bags as packaging material in business establishments, fast-food outlets, market places, food kiosks, and sari-sari stores.
Despite being passed on October 2015, there are still establishments that do not follow CO No. 562, said Councilor Em Ang.
“There is a need to strictly enforce the regulation to prevent potential harms like flooding,” Ang said.
The plastic bags – being non-biodegradable – clog the city’s drainage system, rivers and other waterways, the councilor explained.
“It can put public health to danger,” she added.
Under the ordinance, violators will be fined P1,000 for first offense, P3,000 for second offense, and P5,000 for third offense and/or imprisonment for six months./PN
