ILOILO City – Information empowers people and those involved in information work know that the valuable information they provide help the public.
May Rago-Castillo, information officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 6 and a three-time best performing information officer (IO) awardee of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), said information dissemination is truly important in her work.
“On it rests the success or failure of the agency’s programs. A better understanding of programs ensures their good implementation with the goal of reaching the beneficiaries,” she said.
Rago said her passion has always been to be of service to others.
“It feels good when I am able to put a smile on the face of a child or an elderly, and help the vulnerable have access to government services such as those in crisis situations. All these bring a sense of fulfillment,” she said.
Meanwhile, Roilo Vincent Laguna, information officer of the Commission on Population (PopCom) Region 6 and a two-time best performing information officer awardee, said information dissemination is valuable in their organization.
“It is PopCom’s task to provide accurate information to the public regarding sexual and reproductive health rights. By doing so, people can make informed decisions in life contributing to nation-building,” he said.
Laguna said being an information officer is more than just a job; it is a commitment to give the public the correct information.
“Seeing the realities of life in the grassroots make me continue and going. Above anything else, I grew and was changed by this, thus, it is my duty to pay it forward,” he said.
In terms of garnering accolades for the work that they do, Castillo said recognition motivates her to strive more and also serves as a reminder that what lies ahead is a tremendous work of ensuring that more people could avail themselves of the agency’s programs.
“Even those in the mountains and far-flung areas need to know our services so they could access them,” she said.
On one hand, Laguna said awards are special but simply considers them as “bonus.” For him, what is more significant are the stakeholders he is able to help.
“Our mantra is ‘Empowering Filipino Families’. This is my role as a true government worker,” he said.
PIA-6 spearheads the annual search for best performing information officers in Western Visayas to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of information officers in the national government agencies and local government units. (PIA-Iloilo)/PN
