BACOLOD City – The city government will soon decide on the fate of its sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.
Plans must be finalized by 2017, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said.
Leonardia said the Solid Waste Management Board considers shutting down the facility and putting up a new one.
On Aug. 31 he visited the sanitary landfill and criticized its poor maintenance.
It looks like an open dumpsite, the mayor said days after the landfill visit. He blamed his predecessor, Monico Puentevella, whose administration spent at least P400 million for its maintenance.
Leonardia said the Board also entertains several groups proposing “waste-to-worth” and “waste-to-energy” projects.
Also in August Councilor Em Ang questioned how the Puentevella administration paid a contractor for landfill management when there was no landfill to manage.
She cited a Department of Public Services report saying “there is no [sanitary] landfill” in Bacolod.
Further developing the landfill is an option, too, but Leonardia said city hall is in a “complicated situation.”
The title of the land where the landfill is located has not yet been named under the city government.
A case regarding the alleged overpricing of the landfill lot is pending with the Commission on Audit, said Leonardia.
The property costs P23 million but city paid the landowner only P20 million./PN
