MANILA – Teammates will turn rivals when the PBA awards the Season 42 Most Valuable Player (MVP) during the 2017 PBA Leo Awards tonight at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Among the top contenders for the league’s top individual award are San Miguel Beermen’s June Mar Fajardo, who is eyeing his fourth straight MVP award, Chris Ross and Alex Cabagnot.
Fajardo is favored to win another MVP trophy after he was hailed the Philippine Cup’s Best Player of the Conference.
He could have also easily won during Governors’ Cup but Beermen failed to reach at least the semifinals.
Being the top three in the season MVP race made Fajardo, Cabagnot and Ross, the BPC in the Commissioner’s Cup, part of the first Mythical 5 selection squad.
Also in contention for the guard spot in the Mythical 5 are Beermen’s Marcio Lassiter, Star Hotshots’ Paul Lee, NLEX Road Warriors’ Alex Mallari, Meralco Bolts’ Chris Newsome, GlobalPort Batang Pier’s Stanley Pringle and Terrence Romeo, and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings’ Earl Scottie Thompson.
Contenders in the forward/center position are Alaska Aces’ Calvin Abueva, Kings’ Japeth Aguilar and Joe Devance, Batang Pier’s Sean Anthony, Bolts’ Cliff Hodge, Beermen’s Arwind Santos, TNT KaTropa’s Kelly Williams, and Phoenix Fuel Masters’ Matthew Wright.
Ross, meanwhile, is one of the favorites to win the Most Improved Player award along with Blackwater Elite’s Mike Digregorio and Allein Maliksi, Bolts’ Baser Amer, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ Raymond Almazan, and KaTropa’s Troy Rosario.
Wright, on the other hand, is a top contender for the Rookie of the Year award against KaTropa’s Roger Pogoy, Hotshots’ Jio Jalalon, Kings’ Kevin Ferrer, and Kia Picanto’s Reden Celda./PN
