CEBU City – She left her two children inside their house when fire broke out around 5 p.m. on Friday in Sitio Paradise, Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City.
Only the bones of the one-year-old and three-year-old children were found after firefighters controlled the fire around 7 p.m. on the same day.
The mother said the children were sleeping at the second floor of their house when she left them.
It was later found out that the children woke up played with matchsticks which caused the blaze, ABS-CBN News reported.
The mother said she panicked, leaving her kids behind, she told the local radio station DYSS Super Radyo.
The blaze – which was raised to general alarm about 20 minutes after it started – gutted around 300 houses built along the shoreline near the bridge linking the cities of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue.
Some houses near the area, in sitios Kitchen and Kamansi, eventually caught flames.
Fire affected an estimated 2,000 individuals, according to Barangay Pajo village chief Junard Chan.
Affected families were currently staying at the Pajo Elementary School, Pajo National High School and the covered court of nearby Barangay Pusok, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
It was not immediately clear how much the total damage the fire has left. (With a report from ABS-CBN News/PN)
