ILOILO – Western Visayas was the 10th most populous region in the Philippines, the 2015 Census of Population showed.
Its population reached 4,477,247 — 4.43 percent of the total Philippine population — as of Aug. 1, 2015, higher by 282,668 compared with the 4.19 million recorded in 2010.
Among its provinces, Iloilo (excluding the capital city) was the most populous with 1.94 million.
Capiz followed with (rounded off) 761,000; Antique, 575,000; Aklan, 572,000; and Guimaras Island, 15,000.
Among the cities and municipalities in Region 6 (excluding the highly urbanized Iloilo City), Roxas City was the most populous with 167,003 people.
Rounding out the Top 5 most populous cities/municipalities were Oton, Iloilo, with 89,115; Kalibo, Aklan, 80,605; component city of Passi, Iloilo, 80,544; and Pototan, Iloilo, 75,070.
Belison, Antique was the least populous city/municipality with 13,539, followed by Bingawan, Iloilo with 15,539 and Lezo, Aklan with 15,224.
Among 3,389 barangays, Calumpang (Iloilo City) was the most populous with 15,150, followed by Manoc-manoc (Malay, Aklan/Boracay Island) with 12,703.
Philippine Statistics Authority regional director Fred Sollesta said the region’s population was on the downtrend mainly because of the transfer of Negros Occidental and its capital, Bacolod City, to Negros Island Region./PN
