ILOILO City – Christmas 2016 was the last for 36-year-old Edward Eucare of Barangay Igang, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras.
A ship maintenance personnel of M/V John B. Lacson docked at Muelle Loney in this city, Eucare was shot dead by the ship’s security guard around 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 25.
Police said Eucare died of gunshot wounds in the stomach and back.
The suspect, Edson Pelonia of Oton, Iloilo, fled after the shooting. But in a text message to his superior, ship engineer Felipe Poloa, he claimed self-defense.
As of this writing, Pelonia’s whereabouts were unknown.
According to Iloilo City Police Office investigators, both Eucare and Pelonia were on duty at the ship on Christmas Day.
The suspect’s text message to Poloa read: “Sir, natiruhan ko si Edward kay patyon nya ako kag ikaw. Gin unahan ko na lang siya. Self-defense lang ang natabo, ang armas gin bilin ko sa barko.”
“We are investigating to know what really happened,” said Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso, city police director.
Eucare’s body was found at the back of M/V John B. Lacson.
In a radio interview, Eucare’s wife Jona said around 10 p.m. on Dec. 24 her husband phoned her.
“He said he would call again around 12 midnight,” said Jona. “We were shocked when somebody informed us the following morning that he had been shot dead.”/PN
