ILOILO City – The Zonta Club of Iloilo City II continues its campaign to end violence against women. In commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women that was designated by the United Nations General Assembly on Dec. 17, 1999, the 16-day “Zonta Says NO to Violence against Women” campaign kicked off on Nov. 25.

Violence against women is a global pandemic, with at least one out of every three women worldwide being a victim of abuse. “We, the Zonta Club of Iloilo City II, condemn this act and we cannot accept it so we vow [for] zero violence against women and we will continue to provide beneficial programs and services to women and children of our locality,” said Zonta Club of Iloilo City II president Ivy L. Gurrea. Marivic Mabilog, assistant chair of the club‘s women’s desk committee, furthermore explained that the organization “walks its talk.” “In Zonta, we define ourselves as activists for women’s rights and we advocate violence against women. In Zonta, we walk our talk. [Our] one whole day of activism [is] a lifetime commitment to women empowerment.” In partnership with the Golden Z and Z Clubs of St. Therese MTC Colleges, a “dump violence” board was displayed to raise awareness and encourage female students to express their opinions on this alarming situation. Following the event were the blessing of the Women and Children Protection Desk at Iloilo City Police Office and the unveiling of its marker. The Zonta Club of Iloilo City II funded the rehabilitation of the office to cater to the needs of abused women and children in the city. The marker, meanwhile, was also in collaboration with the United Architects of the Philippines Iloilo-Marikudo Chapter. Abused women and children and concerned citizens can coordinate directly to the Women’s Desk of Iloilo City Police Office. The Zonta Club of Iloilo City II remains strong to its commitment to empower women through its programs for health and education./PN
