SAN JOSE, Antique – Echoing her father’s perception on illegal drugs, Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio urged youngsters in Antique to stay away from prohibited substances at all costs.

“Illegal drugs will only destroy your life,” Duterte-Carpio said during the recent Provincial Youth Day at the EBJ Freedom Park where she was a guest speaker.

Duterte-Carpio, daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte, touched on the issues of illegal drugs and teenage pregnancy.

She called on the Antiqueño youth to try to have a positive attitude toward life and not to yield to peer pressure.

Parents should also help their children avoid situations detrimental to their welfare, Duterte-Carpio said.

Boredom, broken family, poverty may push teens to try something new and exciting, and lead them to risky behavior, she said.

Moreover, the Davao City mayor also appealed to couples to practice family planning.

The lack of family planning may lead to a large family, which is easily associated with poverty, she said.

Planning their desired number of children will allow parents to afford their basic needs, said the mayor.

Teenage pregnancy, meanwhile, may hamper a girl’s education, said Duterte-Carpio.

According to her, teenage mothers were more likely to drop out of school.

Aside from attending the Provincial Youth Day, Duterte-Carpio also visited a public elementary school in this capital town for a gift-giving activity. (PIA/PN)
