SAN JOSE, Antique – Two islands were awaiting assessment for their possible declaration as rabies-free areas.
Mararison in Culasi town and the island municipality of Caluya have had no rabies cases for almost five years now, said Provincial Veterinarian Romeo Magdato.
Only the Agriculture and Health departments’ central office may make such declaration based on the assessment of the regional offices.
Magdato hoped the two islands will be assessed soon.
The declaration could further boost their tourism potentials, he stressed.
The local governments of Culasi and Caluya strictly monitor the entry of dogs.
“[They] prohibit bringing in of dogs so the local canine population won’t be infected with rabies,” Dr. Magdato said.
Dog vaccination against rabies was also being held in the islands yearly. (PNA)
