JORDAN, Guimaras – Locals and the Environment department have come up with a management plan that serves as their pledge for the better conservation of the Balcon Marine Protected Area.

The plan involving strategies for area development was a collection of inputs during a meeting-workshop in Sitio Singcalang, Barangay Balcon Melliza.

“We sincerely laud the local government unit (LGU) for collaborating with us in its marine protection and conservation program,” said Regional Director Jim O Sampulna of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Aside from the management plan, a lecture on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in relation to marine protected areas was also held on Jan. 18.

“It is when LGUs proactively work with us that we efficiently deliver our mandate as your Environment department,” Sampulna said.

Balcon Marine Protected Area was established in 2012 to protect and maintain Guimaras’ natural biological and physical diversity.

Over the past years, the Environment department said, it has been teaching locals how they can manage and care for the marine resources in the island province.

Approximately 40 people from barangays Balcon Maravilla and Balcon Mellliza, including fisherfolk, attended the meeting-workshop.

The Office of the Municipal Agriculturist and the Environment department’s provincial office initiated the event. (With DENR/PN)
