SAN JOSE, Antique – As part of its Culasi-San Jose 69-kiloVolt (kV) transmission line project, power grid operator National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to plant, maintain and protect no less than 89,000 tree seedlings in a 50-hectare land in Patnongon and a 31-hectare land in Tibiao, both in Antique.
In coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), NGCP tapped two people’s organizations (POs) – the Barangay Patlabawon Integrated Social Forestry Upland Farmers Association, Inc. (BPISFUFAI) and Tuno Upland Farmers Association, Inc. (TUFAI), as partners in the administration of the lands.
The POs will also benefit from the partnership. The commercial and fruit-bearing trees to be planted will be additional sources of livelihood for them.
For its part, DENR will undertake the necessary survey and mapping of the project sites and provide technical assistance and training to the POs.
The launching of its reforestation projects was part of NGCP’s active engagement in environmental protection and stewardship in relation to its operations.
“While providing a stronger, expanded power grid, NGCP ensures that its operations will only have minimum impact to the environment but maximum benefit to the nearby communities,” according to the power grid operator in a statement.
For every tree cut, 100 native seedlings will be planted in its place.
“We also ensure that these seedlings reach maturity and are properly managed to benefit both the environment and the POs,” stated NGCP.
The Culasi-San Jose 69-kV transmission line project will pass from the municipality of Culasi to the municipality of San Jose. One of NGCP’s priority projects, it will be constructed to benefit the people of Aklan and Antique.
The line will play an important role in completing the loop of electricity flow in western Panay Island and in improving the quality and reliability of power delivered to households, offices, schools, and businesses in the area.
NGCP is a privately-owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid. It transmits high-voltage electricity through “power superhighways” that include the interconnected system of transmission lines, towers, substations, and related assets.
The consortium holds a 25-year concession contract to operate the country’s power transmission network./PN
