ILOILO City – To further enhance Western Visayas’ disaster preparedness, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) will introduce additional weather-monitoring equipment to the region.
Coastal radars and weather stations are among the facilities that Pagasa will be establishing in strategic areas of the region.
Pagasa Visayas director Oscar Tabada said coastal radars will be installed in Iloilo and Guimaras.
The radars can do real-time weather monitoring via remote sensing of sea conditions between ports even in the absence of a storm warning signal in the locality.
At the recent Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) regular meeting, Tabada also said they will be putting up weather stations at the airports in Kalbo, Aklan and San Jose, Antique.
Pagasa also has implemented Early Warning Systems in Region 6 and other region of the Visayas in the form of Doppler weather radar stations. Through these radars, Pagasa can give hourly forecast about the position and location of a typhoon.
Tabada said 13 radar stations are operational, with two undergoing construction.
