FILIPINA-AMERICAN high jump athlete Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks could be headed overseas for college – she has received scholarship offers from two universities in the United States.
The Leon, Iloilo native told Panay News in an interview that they will have to choose between University of Texas at El Paso and Trojan California University if she decides to go abroad.
“Of course, it is flattering that they offered me scholarships,” Brooks said. “Kay Coach Noel (Diel) nila in-offer ang scholarship.”
“He knows me well, and I trust him to decide. He has been my mentor since I started in high jump,” the athlete said of her coach.
Brooks will soon be occupied by preparations for Palarong Pambansa after bagging gold in the secondary girls high jump in the recently concluded WVRAA Meet in Iloilo City – breaking the record in the regional meet by posting 1.68 meters.
“I do not want to think about that yet,” she said of college. “I want to focus on my upcoming tournament.”
Aside from the United States schools, Brooks also drew interest from the Manila-based University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, and Ateneo de Manila University.
Provincial Sports Development Officer Ray Cabarles said they were currently concentrating on Brooks’ campaign in the national games where they aim to break another record – something that could bode well for the athlete’s chances of studying abroad.
“Sa ngayon mas gusto muna namin na pagtuonan niya ng pansin iyong Palaro,” said Cabarles. “Ang target nga namin ay burahin anuman ang existing record doon para masigurado na iyong US scholarship niya.”
He added: “We are really determined to make that happen for her because she has the potential. We plan to hire a person that can help her prepare for that competition.”/PN
