KALIBO, Aklan – Twenty-four groups will compete with each other in Ati-Atihan Festival’s SangKalibong Modern Tamboe contest.
The winning group will receive a P250,000 cash prize.
Nonstop street dancing accompanied by the competing groups’ lyre tinkles and drumbeats is expected on the streets in this capital’s downtown area on Jan. 16, according to festival organizer Kalibo Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi).
The competing groups from Kalibo are Adamas Ace, Akatksi, Aklanon Troopers, Bunggos 0501, Delex 300, D’Emagine, Lagalag 27 Original, Ninolitos, Pirates 1962, Royal Scorpio, The Godfather, Toronian Hotshots, SNV Chickboys, Was-ag, Vigilants Kalibo, 3J’s Marino, and 509 Society.
Aeang-Aeang, Blue Birds and Bantod Smile from Numancia, D’Neighborhood from Makato, Roadside and Kamicouzins from Banga, and Cnemuron from New Washington will also join the contest.
Kasafi chairman Albert Menez said the groups – with at least 24 members – will have a 10-minute performance at Pastrana Park after the street dance.
They must use “old songs” in their performances. The use of pails, plastic PVC-type containers, wheel-carried drums, and empty gasoline drums are not allowed, Menez added.
The winners will be announced on Jan. 21 at Magsaysay Park at 9 p.m. during the Pagpadungog.
Ati-Atihan will be from Jan 12 to 21 next month. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
