ILOILO City – A nine-year-old girl, her eight-year-old brother and a 31-year-old relative drowned at Badbaran River in Barangay Lawaan, Dumarao, Capiz yesterday around 9 a.m.
Senior Inspector Wilfredo Escarella, Dumarao police chief, identified the victims as siblings Princess and Jon Marco Maravilla, and Marie Luz Gonzaga.
From what the Dumarao police so far gathered, Gonzaga asked permission from the children’s mother Marivic to take the children with her to a nearby field.
Gonzaga had a carabao set for grazing there, said Escarella.
Neighbors witnessed the drowning and tried to revive Princess and Marie Luz but to no avail.
It was past noon when the body of Jon Marco was fished out of the river.
Citing the statements from neighbors who witnessed the drowning, Escarella said Marie Luz tried to save the siblings but she, too, drowned.
“The river current was strong. On Saturday night it rained hard,” Escarella told Panay News./PN
