ILOILO City – Three jail officers at the Iloilo City District Jail (ICDJ) in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district were facing an administrative case, according to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

A neglect of duty charge may be filed against them for failing to recover the mobile phone an inmate was allegedly using to direct drug transactions outside, said Jail Superintendent Gilbert Peremne, assistant regional director for administration.

Inmate Werjun Tañate was linked to two 17-year-old drug pushing suspects caught in a “shabu bodega” in Barangay Sooc, Arevalo district.

A mobile phone seized from the two minors contained text messages indicating shabu transactions traced to Tañate. A white mobile phone was later recovered from the inmate.

The two minors and another suspect, Reynold Fruelda, got from Tañate instructions on who to sell to and where to get their supply, the Police Regional Office 6’s Regional Drug Enforcement Unit head Senior Inspector Kennith Bermejo said, citing investigation.

At the time of the operation, the three Jail Officers 2 were in charge of the facility and roving guards, Peremne said, citing another investigation conducted by Senior Jail Officer 1 Felix Servidad.

Peremne refused to name the jail guards. All he said was they were found liable. “They failed to know that an inmate had a cellphone reportedly used in shabu transactions.”

They will be recommended for reassignment, added Peremne.

The Arevalo operation at around 6 p.m. on Jan. 20 led to the seizure of 109 sachets of shabu worth P200,000.

Fruelda was caught two hours after the two minors were arrested. Police recovered from him eight big sachets of shabu worth P180,000.

The ICDJ warden Jail Superintendent Vicente Papelera placed Tañate in an isolation cell.

Tañate was arrested in June 2017 for illegal drugs. He claimed that the white cellphone seized from him was given by a fellow inmate in December 2017 before the latter was sent to the New Bilibid Prison.

A charge for “conspiring to sell illegal drugs” may be filed against Tañate, Papelera had said./PN
