ILOILO City – An inmate who escaped Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 6 custody last year used a different surname to hide his identity and evade arrest, the agency said.

Reynaldo Cavintoy fled the PDEA regional office in Fort San Pedro on Dec. 6 last year by jumping over the fence.

Agents recaptured him at around 3 a.m. on Feb. 2 in Sitio Manguisibo, Barangay San Isidro, Toboso, Negros Occidental.

Toboso municipal police station operatives helped in the rearrest of the resident of Barangay Veterans Village, City Proper.

A concerned citizen tipped off the agents, according to PDEA regional director Wardley Getalla. They learned that Cavintoy was using the name “Reynaldo Ramos,” Getalla said.

Cavintoy was staying with a couple in a small house, said Getalla.

The PDEA official refused to name the couple as they further look into their background.

They may be relatives of Cavintoy or were just helping the latter, clueless of his real identity, said Getalla.

Getalla said the couple may face charges if it can be proven that they knew who Cavintoy really was and harbored him.

On the other hand, an additional case may be filed against Cavintoy for escaping, the PDEA official said.

At the time Cavintoy fled, he and eight other drug suspects were supposed to undergo a physical examination at the nearby Police Regional Office 6 crime laboratory.

Cavintoy was charged with violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (visiting a drug den) after his arrest on Nov. 15 last year at a boardinghouse in Barangay Seminario, Jaro district that PDEA operatives raided.

Shabu worth P460,000 was recovered from the boardinghouse.

Aside from Cavintoy, five others were arrested: Maribel Hulleza, Julmar Taub, Hernani Tipayan, Robert Alipat, and Eduardo Pineda.

Hulleza and Taub were tenants of the boardinghouse and PDEA suspected them of having ties with the Prevendido drug group leader, Richard Prevendido, who was killed in a shootout with policemen in Barangay Balabago, Jaro on Sept. 1 last year./PN
