ROXAS City – A total of 3,083 elementary school pupils tested negative for lymphatic filariasis in Capiz.
The Provincial Health Office (PHO) conducted the Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS) to determine the disease’s prevalence.
The World Health Organization described lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, as a painful and profoundly disfiguring disease causing temporary or permanent disability such as enlargement of the feet, hands, breasts, and scrotum. It is caused by three species of thread-like nematode worms known as filariae.
The male and female worms together form “nests” in the human lymphatic system, the network of nodes and vessels that maintain the delicate fluid balance between blood and body tissues.
The lymphatic system is an essential component of the body’s immune system.
Through the Immuno Chromatographic Test or card test of blood, TAS was done on Grade 1 and 2 pupils from 57 schools in the 1st and 2nd districts in Capiz.
Some of filariasis’ symptoms are chronic fever, chills, headache, swollen lymph nodes on the hips, and body pain.
But despite the survey result, PHO continues to monitor and take action against filariasis. Health is one of the priorities of the provincial government.
The TAS was conduct from Nov. 17 to 29.
In the Philippines, the elimination of lymphatic filariasis started in 2001 in 44 endemic provinces, including Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Antique in Western Visayas.
In 2004, DOH issued an administrative order declaring the month of November as “Filariasis Mass Treatment Month.”(Capiz Aksyon News Center/PN)
