ILOILO City – Three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found in Barangay Calumpang, Molo district yesterday.
Operatives from the Explosives and Ordnance Disposal Unit of the Iloilo City Police Office applied a render safe procedure to dismantle the IEDs, said Senior Police Officer 1 Steven Salaya, one of the responding officers.
The procedure involved immersing the IEDs – locally known as dalugdog – in water to prevent detonation, Salaya told Panay News in a phone interview. Black powder and shattered glass were among the components they found, he said.
Village councilman Lordeni Lim called the Molo police station about the IEDs around 11 a.m. The station in turn called the explosives disposal unit.
Information on the owner of the IEDs or why they were placed or left in Calumpang were not immediately available as of press time.
Salaya said their team had recently undergone refresher training in Camp Crame.
Yesterday, they brought with them equipment in locating and identifying explosives but were unable to use them.
“Pag-abot namon na-identify man namon dayon,” he told Panay News. “[There was] no need to use tools like the portable X-ray [scanner] kay makita man namon ang IED.”/PN
