ILOILO – With the high number of road crashes in Western Visayas, provincial governments were encouraged to enact road safety ordinances.
Such ordinances, the Department of Health said, must integrate laws on the use of helmets and seatbelts, speeding, and distracted driving.
Western Visayas is one of the five regions in the Philippines with the highest cases of road accidents, according to the Online National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, or ONEISS.
One factor in road crashes is the attitude of drivers, and this cannot be changed overnight, said Dr. Mary Ann Sta. Lucia, the Health department regional office’s coordinator for Violence and Injury Prevention Alliance, or VIPA.
Sta. Lucia has attended the Global Road Safety Leadership Course in the United States from July 30 to Aug. 11.
Under the Region 6 VIPA, transportation related agencies convene to look into road safety management issues.
They include the Land Transportation Office, the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board, the Department of Public Works and Highways, and the Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office of the Iloilo City government.
Iloilo, Guimaras and Antique have crafted their respective road safety ordinances while Aklan was still deliberating its own, said Sta. Lucia.
Negros Occidental, on the other hand, invited the VIPA to a discussion on the crafting of such ordinance in November. (PNA)
