ILOILO City – Police plan to file today a murder charge against the suspect in shooting a 24-year-old man at Smallville on Sunday.
Chief Inspector Juvy Navales, Mandurriao district police chief, is confident they have sufficient evidence against Vanlen Jyro Joseph Hulleza, 22, of Barangay Sambag, Jaro.
Mandurriao police were awaiting the result of the autopsy on Remier Tan of Lawaan Village, Jaro as of press time.
Aside from witness accounts, the bloodstain on his white Suzuki Jimny and the security camera footage showing him riding the vehicle after the shooting “make for a strong case” against the suspect, said Navales.
Tan, a medical technology graduate, was shot at around 5:35 a.m. on San Jose Street at the entertainment complex in Mandurriao. He was taken to the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital where he expired.
Navales said they will file the charge at the City Prosecutor’s Office.
Hulleza was detained at the Mandurriao police station. He refused to be interviewed.
Before the shooting, an argument ensued between Hulleza and Tan at Prism bar, initial police investigation showed. They were with separate groups of friends at the time, police said.
Tan and his friends were walking home when Hulleza and company followed them. Hulleza threw a bottle to catch Tan’s attention, and then gunshots were heard, said the police, citing witnesses.
Officers reviewed a security camera footage showing the car the suspect used to escape.
Their suspicion that the modified vehicle – they said the wheels were replaced with bigger ones – was at a car show at the Iloilo Business Park allowed them to trace the vehicle to Sambag, Jaro./PN
