SAN JOSE, Antique – The week-long National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Olympics has begun.
This year, the University of Antique (UA) hosts the event for the first time.
Yesterday, UA welcomed delegates of 111 state universities and colleges from across the country.
Over 7,000 delegates – composed of athletes, coaches and sports officials – has arrived in this capital town.
The Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges and the association of public tertiary academic institutions are governing the sports event.
Starting today, the delegates will compete in archery, arnis, badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, dance sports, football, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, pencal silat, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, and volleyball.
The Search for Mr. and Ms. SCUAA 2018 – one of the highlights of the event – will be held today, too.
Yesterday, the delegates assembled around 2:30 p.m. at the Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park for the athletic parade.
It was followed by an opening program at the Binirayan Sports Complex.
Championship games will fall on the last day, Feb. 23 – the same day of the awarding ceremonies at the UA gym.
UA president Dr. Pablo S. Crespo Jr. said the playing venues are ready.
Crespo asked for the support of all Antiqueños for the success of the national sports event, which has a P10-million budget.
“This is not just an affair of the UA alone, but of all Antiqueños. Let us show our visitors that we are very hospitable, kind and good people. Let us make the stay of our visitors here worthwhile,” he added.
Crespo also appealed to tricycle and jeepney drivers and businessmen not to overcharge customers, especially visitors./PN
