Iloilo province combines urban centers such as Iloilo City with more remote municipalities, creating a unique mix of opportunities and obstacles for oral health care.
Understanding the current state of dental health in the province highlights the progress made as well as the work that still needs to be done.
Dental diseases, particularly tooth decay (dental caries) and gum disease (periodontitis), remain prevalent in the province.
Many children enter school with cavities, and untreated oral conditions are common among adults. Tooth loss, chronic pain, and infections impact quality of life, nutrition, and overall health. These problems are often exacerbated by limited preventive care and irregular dental visits.
Dietary habits also play a role in oral health. High consumption of sugary snacks and drinks, combined with inconsistent oral hygiene practices, contributes to a higher incidence of cavities.
Despite efforts to raise awareness, many residents still only visit a dentist when experiencing severe pain rather than for preventive care.
