CAPIZ — Several fishing vessels at the Libas Fishing Port in Roxas City have temporarily ceased operations as surging fuel prices continue to strain the local fishing industry.
The development has been linked to volatility in global fuel markets, reportedly influenced by escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In a local radio interview, Fishing Port Supervisor Garret Ansel Baes expressed concern over the mounting operational costs faced by fishermen.
He said the sharp increase in fuel prices has made it increasingly difficult for many to sustain fishing activities.
“Many of our traditional fishing boats are now sitting idle at the dock instead of heading out to sea,” Baes said.
He added that rising costs have led to reduced fishing trips and lower catch volumes, directly affecting the income of fishermen and their families.
The impact is also being felt at the port level, with Baes noting a decline in revenue at Libas Fishing Port compared to previous years.
The downturn, he said, threatens not only the livelihood of individual fishermen but also the broader local economy, which heavily depends on the fishing industry.
In light of the situation, Baes called on the government to provide immediate assistance to struggling fishermen.
He stressed the need for interventions that would help ease financial burdens and support efforts to revitalize the industry, enabling fishermen to resume operations.
