CAPIZ — The Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) inaugurated the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 6 (RACU-6) Satellite Office in Sigma town on June 9, marking a significant step in strengthening efforts against cybercrime in Capiz and Aklan.
The establishment of the satellite office aims to address the increasing incidence of digital offenses and provide easier access to cybercrime-related services for residents of the two provinces.
Before the facility was opened, victims of cyber-related crimes had to travel to Iloilo City to report incidents and seek assistance from authorities.
The RACU-6 Satellite Office will serve as a local hub for reporting and responding to cybercrimes, including online fraud, identity theft, cyber harassment, misinformation, and other digital offenses.
Among its key functions are cybercrime reporting, digital forensics coordination, investigative support, and public awareness campaigns promoting online safety and responsible digital practices.
Authorities said the office will facilitate the reporting of cybercrime incidents, assist in the collection and preservation of digital evidence, support law enforcement investigations, and conduct information drives to educate the public about online threats.
As internet use continues to expand, local officials view the facility as a vital addition to the region’s law enforcement capabilities in addressing emerging digital security concerns.
Present during the inauguration were PNP-ACG Director Major General Wilson Asueta, Police Regional Office 6 Director Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño, and RACU-6 Chief Colonel Richard Adonis J. Habawel.
Joining them were local government officials, including Capiz Gov. Fredenil “Oto” Castro, Vice Gov. James “Mitang” Magbanua, Capiz 2nd District Rep. Howard Guintu, Capiz 1st District Rep. Jane Castro, and mayors from various municipalities in the province.
Sigma Mayor Dante Rizal Eslabon underscored the growing threat posed by online misinformation and malicious digital content, noting their potential to damage reputations and disrupt communities.
“The opening of this facility reflects a stronger government commitment to protecting citizens not only in physical spaces but also in the digital realm,” Eslabon said.
Guintu likewise emphasized the increasing number of online scams and cyberbullying cases accompanying the rapid growth of digital platforms.
He said the satellite office would provide much-needed assistance to cybercrime victims who previously faced difficulties accessing specialized services outside the province.
Authorities said the establishment of the RACU-6 Satellite Office strengthens local law enforcement’s capacity to combat cybercrime while promoting a safer online environment for residents of Capiz and neighboring areas./PN
