KALIBO, Aklan – Community fish landing centers will be built in 11 coastal municipalities in the next two years.
Buruanga, Malay, Nabas, Tangalan, Ibajay, Makato, Numancia, Kalibo, New Washington, Batan, and Altavas have been identified as recipients of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ (BFAR) post-harvest facilities this year.
Biddings for the projects in Nabas and Numancia have been completed.
The fish landing center in barangays Afga in Tangalan and Songcolan in Batan will be built soon.
These facilities are under BFAR’s Targeted Actions to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation program.
Similar projects were included in the 2015 budget, among them the fish landing centers in Barangay Mabilo, Kalibo (set for inauguration on Oct. 12); New Washington; Buruanga; and Altavas.
Opened on June 28, the community fish landing center in Barangay Colong-Colong, Ibajay, was the first to be inaugurated in Aklan.
BFAR established five units of shallow payaw (fish aggregating device) for fisherfolk in New Washington, Kalibo, Batan, Makato, and Numancia.
It also turned over 15 bancas to Altavas, Ibajay, Kalibo, Nabas, Tangalan, Numancia, Batan, Makato, New Washington, and Buruanga.
Its ongoing projects include providing gill nets to coastal towns; crab traps for Batan and New Washington; multiple handlines for Buruanga, Kalibo, Makato, Nabas, and Tangalan; squid jiggers for Numancia and Makato; and tuna handlines for Buruanga, Ibajay, Malay, and Tangalan.
