ILOILO City – The performance of Dinagyang Festival ati-ati tribes this year was undeniably beautiful but their production design needed improvement, according to an Ilonggo multimedia artist.
“A lot of props they used were pointless or inappropriate. They put to question the aesthetics of the choreographers and production designers,” said Elvert Bañares.
He lamented the few innovations introduced in the 49-year-old festival.
There was no harmony in the costumes of the male warriors and female dancers, Bañares observed.
“Ang warrior ethnic pero ang female kis-a silk, neon or gold,” he said.
He commended three tribes that did not commit this mistake – Panayanon, Pan-ay and Obreros.
There was a need to professionalize production design and craftsmanship, said Bañares.
“Some materials were falling off. The costumes of the female performers were not sewn solidly. But I like the costumes of the male warriors,” he said.
Bañares also commended two tribes – Panayanon and Obreros – for using less risers this year.
Risers are theater platforms used to provide varying levels to make a show more visually interesting.
“The tribes did more performing without the risers. I appreciated this. I was one of the many complaining in recent years against the use of distracting risers and panel or boards,” said Bañares./PN
