CEBU City – Fire-related deaths in Central Visayas quadrupled last year, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said.
From eight deaths in 1,045 fire incidents in 2015, cases rose to around 34 deaths in 842 incidents in 2016, according to Fire Senior Superintendent Samuel Tadeo, BFP regional director.
Among the fatalities last year were children left inside their houses while their parents were away, said Tadeo.
Most victims died of suffocation as they chose to run to their bathrooms and got trapped, the fire officer added.
But the cost of damage to property last year reached only P85.87 million compared to the P99.58 million in 2015, the BFP said.
Tadeo said they also lack firefighters. The BFP has 122 open positions.
According to Tadeo, they are aiming for the ideal 1:2,000 firefighter-resident ratio.
Anyone aged between 21 and 30 years old and has a college degree may apply, he said.
Female applicants should be at least 5 feet, 2 inches tall, while male applicants should be at least 5 feet, 4 inches.
On Wednesday the BFP Region 7 kicked off the Fire Prevention Month with a motorcade at 10 a.m. Several offices and organizations, including the police, the city government and fire brigade volunteers, participated.
Tadeo reminded the public to be extra careful, especially during summer, when more fires break out. (PNA)
