MANILA – Local government units were urged to create action plans to adopt a 1.5 degrees Celsius global warming limit.
This could raise growth economic output by at least 1 percent by the 2040s, Sen. Loren Legarda said, citing a 2016 Climate Vulnerable Forum report.
One hundred ninety-five countries signed the Paris climate change agreement in 2015.
The deal intends to limit global warming to no more than 2 degrees Celsius.
“Time is of the essence in climate action,” said the climate change committee chairwoman. “We need to craft local climate change action plans (LCCAP) that embrace the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal.”
According to Legarda, the LCCAP shall include practical solutions and strategies to reduce the impact of climate change.
The Philippines is one of the countries most at risk of the impact of climate change, especially sea level rise, said the senator.
“As long as there is a chance to stop global warming at a level that lets humanity survive and thrive, we should seize it,” she said.
The Climate Change Commission, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Local Government Academy, the Development Academy of the Philippines, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Science and Technology, local government leagues, and learning institutions were directed to help the local governments complete their respective LCCAPs this year.
“The 1.5 degrees Celsius is part of our call for climate justice,” said Legarda. “1.5 upholds human rights and ecosystems integrity; it is that threshold of chance and hope. If we breach it, we lose so many lives and render so much suffering to those who will live.”/PN
