MANILA – Vice President Leni Robredo urged President Rodrigo Duterte to heed the advice of former Colombian president Cesar Gaviria on the war on drugs.
In an op-ed in The New York Times, Gaviria told Duterte “not to repeat [his] mistakes” and consider the illegal drug problem as a public health concern instead of taking a hard line against drug offenders.
“Sana iyong pamahalaan pakinggan iyong kwento at karanasan noong mga dumaan na diyan para sana hindi natin nauulit iyong lahat ng mali na nangyari,” Robredo told a news conference in her Quezon City office on Thursday.
“Mahalaga iyong statement ng former president of Colombia dahil dumaan siya sa ganoong track,” she added. “Mahalaga iyong kwento niya hindi para gayahin natin kundi para pulutan ng aral. Tingin ko hindi makakasama sa atin iyong makinig.”
Gaviria led Colombia’s bloody crackdown on illegal drugs and battled the drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.
But Duterte criticized the former foreign leader instead and called him an “idiot.”
